Mange opfatter måske Jesu liv som en kort epoke i verdenshistorien. Men Bibelen fortæller os, at han i sin egenskab af at være Guds søn er fra evighed til evighed. Han var til før verdens skabelse – og da han fór til Himmelen forsvandt han ikke bare “ud i den blå luft”. I dag er han i Himmelen hos Gud.
Før Jesus forlod jorden sagde han til sine disciple, at han ville komme igen og at de indtil da skulle sprede budskabet om ham i hele verden. Bibelen fortæller os ikke præcist, hvornår Jesus kommer igen. Men der er nedskrevet visse begivenheder, som vil ske før hans komme. Bl.a. at Israel skal samles som nation, hvilket skete i 1948. I de såkaldte “sidste tider” vil katastrofer som krig, hungersnød og jordskælv tage til – den politiske forvirring vil vokse og kærligheden blive kold hos de fleste. I den kaotiske situation griber Jesus ind i verdensbegivenhederne. Han vil komme igen for at hente alle de troende til Himmelen, hvor de skal leve evigt i Guds nærhed.
Dog taler Bibelen også om et evigt liv for dem, der ikke vil tro. Vælger man i sit liv her på jorden at leve uden for fællesskabet med Gud, kommer man heller ikke til at leve hos ham i evigheden. Bibelen kalder dette for fortabelse.
